About Luís I Bridge:

  • The Ponte Dom Luís I is an iconic landmark in Porto and a masterpiece of 19th-century engineering. This bridge spans the River Douro, connecting Porto on the north bank with Vila Nova de Gaia on the south. It was designed by the German architect Téophile Seyrig (1843-1923), a protégé and business partner of the renowned French engineer Alexandre Gustave Eiffel, best known for the Eiffel Tower. Upon its completion in 1886, the Ponte Dom Luís I boasted the longest span of any metal bridge in the world. Initially built for road traffic, today its upper deck accommodates Line D of the Porto metro and a pedestrian walkway, while the lower deck remains open to road traffic and pedestrians, offering breathtaking views for those unafraid of heights.
